President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) delivered a discourse on the transfer of the country's capital at a limited meeting (ratas) at the President's Office, Jakarta. The meeting was attended by cabinet ministers, defense and security officials, and regional leaders. Jokowi revealed the reason for Jakarta's move because it was jammed and prone to flooding. "If we see, the big floods every rainy season is very extreme, a threat in Jakarta," he said at the opening of Ratas at the Presidential Office, Jakarta, Monday (29/4).

"Traffic jams and floods, the reason Jokowi will move the capital city from Jakarta", Jokowi explained that flooding is an old issue that has become a problem in Jakarta. On the other hand, even during the dry season the clean water reserves in the capital only reach 20% of the community's needs because pollution occurs in general in the main rivers in Jakarta.

According to Jokowi, Jakarta is currently carrying the burden of being the center of government and public services as well as the center of business and commerce. Even though some countries have anticipated future developments in the country by moving government centers such as Washington DC, the United States; Canberra, Australia; Putrajaya, Malaysia; Sejong, Korea; and Egypt. Head of the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) Bambang Brodjonegoro added that the problem of flooding in Jakarta was due to a decrease in land on the north coast and rising sea levels. Ground water drops by an average of 7.5 centimeters and has dropped to 60 centimeters in mid-1989 to 2007. Bambang revealed that the land surface will continue to fall by 120 centimeters. Though sea water rises about 6 centimeters due to climate change. "As much as 50% of the Jakarta area is in the category of flood-prone areas and the level of safe flooding is only under 10 years, ideally a large city flood safety is a minimum of 50 years," he said. In addition, Bambang said the economic losses due to congestion in Jakarta reached Rp. 56 trillion every year. Furthermore, he projects the value lost because the congestion density of vehicles can reach Rp. 100 trillion per year. Not to mention, the quality of polluted water can cause poor sanitation. Bambang explained, the new capital city must also represent the national identity. Moreover, Jakarta was Batavia as the center of trade in the results of Dutch development. "The new capital study must be modern and international class, simple is smart, green, and beautiful city," he said.
